Tricky request calls for creative lighting

Today’s assignment was to photograph the new artistic director of Dance North.  My brief was to keep it quite plain, maybe even as plain as with a standard white background.  Sounds a bit boring?  Well – the pic is to be positioned right across the page with text over the plain areas.  So, instead of giving only a choice of plain background I threw in a few extras that are a bit more creative.  Apart from the wall there was nothing that would help the viewer even identify her surroundings with her profession.  I decided to use a glass door that was just next the the exposed bricks to my advantage.  Bouncing a 580EXII into  white reflector umbrella gave me a nice gentle light on the subject but also had the added advantage of reflecting in the glass door and giving the reader something to identify with.  Knowing what many sub-editors are like it will probably get cropped out but what the heck, can’t hurt to get your own gear in the pic every now and then! :-)

Crocodiles are heating up for 2009-2010!

Shot the Townsville Crocodiles team photos last week making it 17 seasons in a row I have done this for the club.  What a great bunch of guys!  Nice that two out of the three national sporting teams in Townsville have players who are friendly and seem genuinely happy to chat and be photographed.  The lineup for the NBL team looks pretty slick with them to be led again by Corey (Homicide) Williams and returning Boomer Peter Crawford.  Here’s a pic of Corey from our session last week.  See you at the game!

Where would we be without Photoshop?

Had to do a quick ‘on-location’ portrait for a client yesterday so after it was done I threw my kids in for a couple of quick snaps, knowing well that this would keep me in the good books with my wife for at least couple of days! :-)

What this does show you is that good Photoshop skills can make a world of difference, even with a bog standard and quite dull portrait.  (Hope I’m not accused of calling my kids bog standard and dull!).  Lighting was very simple as shown by the sketch, back/hair light was about a stop over and the main light was bouncing out of a brolly and also off the wall.  Can’t recall exactly what I did in Photoshop but I did use Color Efex Pro 3.0 tools combined with general Photoshop dodging, cloning and spot healing.

Australian bookstore ripoff!

UPDATE – The book just arrived, I ordered on a Friday afternoon (22 May) at 5pm (local time) and the book was just delivered at 10.30am (local time) this morning (28 May).  Perfectly packaged and in perfect new condition. A+

UPDATE - Thanks to @nikkinewshoes on Twitter I now know of another Aussie online bookstore Fishpond.com.au – results added below

A mate of mine recently recommended I try The Book Depository, a UK based online bookstore (link) instead of getting shafted by Aussie ‘bricks and mortar’ or online stores.  I have been eyeing off American photographer Joe McNally’s book “The Hot Shoe Diaries” and thought it would be a good opportunity to try out The Book Depository.  Here’s the results.

  1. Angus & Robertson Online (Australian bookstore) – AUD$74.95 + AUD$6.00 delivery = AUD$80.95
  2. Dymocks Online (Australian bookstore) – AUD$39.95 + AUD$6.95 delivery = AUD$46.90
  3. Amazon.com (USA online store) – US$26.39 + US$9.98 delivery  = US$36.37 (AUD$46.53)
  4. Fishpond (Australia online store) – AUS$35.60 + AUS$5.99 delivery = AUS$41.59
  5. The Book Depository (UK online store) – GBP£17.07 + Free delivery = GBP£17.07 (AUD$34.68)

Not only is The Book Depository the cheapest by a fair margin but shipping is free and you can also pay by PayPal or ANY credit card type.

Another great example of getting shafted in Australia!

HotSquad hotties!

I’ve just installed NextGen gallery on my blog so I thought I would test it out with this set of pics I shot last year of the lovely girls from the 2008 North Queensland Cowboys HotSquad.  That was a great job!
