Got a spare AUS$1,000,000 to splash on an out-of-date camera?
Posted by Cameron in Equipment, Photography on January 31st, 2010
Recently I wrote a column for a magazine about my personal transition from film to digital 11 years ago. In that column I mentioned that the invention of digital photography was the biggest change in the industry since Louis Daguerre’s ‘Daguerreotype’ amazed people in 1835.
Well, only a couple of days after writing this column I spotted the “Giroux Daguerréotype” up for auction at an Austrian auction house.

This camera was designed by Daguerre and his brother-in-law and sold in limited numbers from 1839. To add to the value it features Daguerre’s signature and is in stunning condition.
If you have the time take the opportunity to learn a bit more about Louis Daguerre, one of the ‘fathers’ of photography. It really is fascinating reading (did you know that the first know picture of Abraham Lincoln was a daguerrotype?)

My little old Olympus Pen looks REALLY out of date now!

My first 35mm camera, An Olympus Pen EE-S
One of my first cameras as a teen was a wonderful Olympus Pen (model EES) 1/2 frame camera. With a roll of 36exp I could get 72 frames (but normally I would squeeze a few more on the end of the roll!). I used to play around with film & developer combinations – I was a big fan of Agfapan 400 B/W and Kodak Tri-X B/W and loved Agfa’s Atomal and Rodinal developers. I can smell those chemicals just thinking about it…. Ahhh memories!
The Pen camera is widely regarded as one of the most influential cameras ever made and for the lucky people who owned one of these I’m sure they’ll understand.
Anyway, Olympus are banking on this love of the marque as they introduce a new digital Pen. And it looks absolutely FANTASTIC! It is still unannounced but here is a spy pic of the top of the upcoming model and some specs. It uses the Micro Four Thirds format which allows it to use interchangeable lenses and the 4:3 aspect ration. The sensor is also much larger than that of other compact digital cameras (5-9 x the size) giving much higher image quality and much better control over depth of field.

Dad, let’s move to Bowen!
Posted by Cameron in Uncategorized on June 26th, 2007
No doubting young Oscar Jackman’s love of Bowen(wood). He has been surfing at Horseshoe Bay, played in the local footy competition, played on Rose Bay sand dunes, baked pies with Paddy at Jochheims Bakery…… the list goes on and on. And it is rumoured that he has asked dad Hugh what the chances on moving to Bowen would be? And now, to plead his case in the strongest possible way – he comes out wearing this shirt. What, with Hugh’s Broncos cap and Oscars “I Love Bowen” shirt – maybe a move to the sunshine state isn’t beyond comprehension?
