A different type of Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM demo

Had a bit of spare time to muck around today while shooting a football training session so I thought I’d hook my 5D MkII (with a 16-35) to my monopod with a magic arm to give you an idea of the field of view difference between a 16mm lens on a full frame camera compared to a 400mm lens on a 1.3x crop DSLR (equivalent to 520mm on a full frame camera).
It’s not that exciting but hopefully it’s better than a poke in the eye! :-)  Feel free to check it out in HD by hitting this link or watch the embedded video below.

A rural wedding beats an NRL match hands down!

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be commissioned to shoot a wedding on the amazing Trafalgar Station south-west of Charters Towers [Google Maps link].  It meant having another photographer fly from Sydney to cover the Cowboys v Tigers NRL match but it was well worth it.  Country hospitality simply can’t be beaten and the Landsberg family who own Trafalgar Station were just brilliant.  They laid on a wedding that would rival any big budget celebrity bash and the laughs, music and drinks flowed freely early into the morning.

Here’s a few pics from the wedding of Martin Cuddihy & Jayne Landsberg, 10 April 2010. (Click on the thumbnails to view a larger version)

Got a spare AUS$1,000,000 to splash on an out-of-date camera?

Recently I wrote a column for a magazine about my personal transition from film to digital 11 years ago.  In that column I mentioned that the invention of digital photography was the biggest change in the industry since Louis Daguerre’s ‘Daguerreotype’ amazed people in 1835.

Well, only a couple of days after writing this column I spotted the “Giroux Daguerréotype” up for auction at an Austrian auction house.

This camera was designed by Daguerre and his brother-in-law and sold in limited numbers from 1839.  To add to the value it features Daguerre’s signature and is in stunning condition.

giroux-daguerreotype-2If you have the time take the opportunity to learn a bit more about Louis Daguerre, one of the ‘fathers’ of photography.  It really is fascinating reading (did you know that the first know picture of Abraham Lincoln was a daguerrotype?)

My local angle on Kevin Rudd’s Emissions Trading Scheme

Yesterday I was sent out to Queensland Nickel’s Yabulu refinery to provide a pic to go along with a story about the new Emissions Trading Scheme introduced to parliament yesterday.  The Australian newspaper ran the pic on page 5 today along with Natasha Bita’s story.
